Metro Far South u/16s Undefeated State Champions
17 August 2009
Coached by our very own Nass Martino, the Metro Far
South u/16s were crowned champions this afternoon in Nowra. George
Moshous, who is also one of our coaches, assisted Nass in the week long
tournament.
The squad played 9 matches, winning 8 and drawing 1...scoring a mammoth 31 goals and only conceding 4 along the way.
In what has been described as "brilliant football", we would like to
congratulate Nass, George and the boys on a magnificent campaign.
Article in the St George Leader....
Defending any sporting title is always a tough task, and this year a very talented u/16s Metro Far South side did it in style.
Sixteen young men from the Sutherland Shire and Wollongong have once again emphasized their superiority at this year’s titles held in South Nowra, to become New South Wales number one team at an under 16 level.
This year, the team was coached by Nass Martino, and assisted by George Moshous – both St George locals.
“With only 2 training sessions available due to the weather, the boys responded tremendously to the demands of modern attacking minded football,” Martino said.
“As coaches we wanted the boys to apply the ideas of the FFA (Football Federation Australia), and we implemented the “Dutch philosophy” the FFA is now following. The boys proved they are more than capable of it, scoring a phenomenal 31 goals and only conceding 4 goals in 9 matches.”
“A tournament like this is very demanding and to go through undefeated is an amazing achievement.”
“The football played was breathtaking. The technical and tactical ability of all players was on show during every match, with their modern, passing and attacking football.”
“I’m sure many of these boys will go on and become successful footballers, both locally and overseas.” Martino added.
“Working with a great bunch of players and a great bunch of young men was a pleasure, and I couldn't be any happier for them for going through the tournament undefeated and being crowned State Champions for 2009” Moshous said.
The boys were,
Goalkeepers: Jack Duncan, Sam Nastic
Defenders: Sam Cornish, Rick De Boer, Matthew Dibiasi, David Meich, Daneil Munilla, Ned Stelzer
Midfielders: Matthew Birkin, Lee Gilroy, Tom Gollins, Andrew Neophytou, David Stojic
Forwards: Jordan Figon, Lachlan O'Connor, Peter Simonovski
